Friends, there are times when reading the Gospel that you need something like a magnifying glass or microscope. Not for all, of course, for there are times when the Lord makes things abundantly clear, such as "Woe, to you." We best pay close attention to what follows that opening, but then again, what part or parts of the Gospel would we not want to pay close attention to?
A microscope in today's Gospel came to mind for a 2-letter word. We might think it is a typo in the Gospel of Luke (Lk 10:21-24) where Jesus uses the word "it" when we would expect Him to say "Me".
"...many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it..."
Desiring to see it or desiring to see Jesus? Which is it?
It would have been easiest for Jesus to tell his disciples that many prophets desired to see HIM. I don't think anyone would balk at that phrase, but instead, Jesus chose the word "it." This begs the question: What is "it?"
We need to define this in our hearts. "It"can be what Jesus is all about, in total. It's all that He stands for. "It" can be a peace that only He can bring. "It" is the way He led His life here on earth, and we are called to do the same. It sounds odd, but we can create "it" just as Jesus did.
The way. The truth. The life. His way. His truth. His life.
So we can ask ourselves: Do we see it? Do we see God in all things? Do we see Jesus in others? Lastly, do we desire to create "it" in our lives as He did?
